As with many things and the people we owe appreciation to this year, there is not much we can do for teacher appreciation week that will truly capture the work our teachers have done to support our students and families. With that being said, I will start with thank you.
Thank you for first and foremost caring about kids. The teachers in Fairbanks Local Schools put students first everyday. They connect with the interests, talents, and abilities of students. They make sure basic needs are met and build relationships to ensure that students know they have trusted adults across our schools.
Thank you for learning remote, hybrid, all-in, and the new tools you have harnessed to help continue learning as our community navigated the swings of the 2020-2021 school year. Any person can identify problems, but you have been solution oriented all year. Those solutions have supported our students through these shifts.
Thank you for putting others before yourself. I know this is something teachers do innately, however, this year it has been more acute. More than once, staff shared their anxiety and personal concerns with me due to the pressures this year has caused. Those pressures stemmed from concerns that they would be responsible for getting a loved one sick, not meeting the needs of students, or failing to meet their typical performance expectations. During those conversations, at some point the person would say “My kids need me though”. This selfless attitude is very much appreciated. Thank you.
Teachers are the difference makers in schools. They are the reason schools are successful. Teachers create excitement about a new book or lead a gardening project in third grade. They lead theme weeks for Homecoming or dress up in character for a history lesson. They call parents because they noticed something off today about a student or get a meal for a student that didn’t eat breakfast. They give high fives (or elbow bumps for 2020-2021) as students come into the classroom. They believe in students. They help them find their voice, tap into their potential, and discover their passion.
There is nothing we can do to truly show the appreciation we have for teachers in Fairbanks Local Schools. We will start with thank you. Thank you for choosing to serve in our schools and everything you do for Fairbanks. Have a great week!!
