For the last two years, we have started our school year by welcoming our staff back to Fairbanks. This is an amazing day for me. This is one of the few times each year that all staff members come together to celebrate our work and service in Fairbanks. Last year, our convocation was recorded making coming back together today even more memorable. Please check out this year’s welcome video:
Our focus this year will be to bring this mission to life. We all play a role in making this happen across our schools. You should see and hear this across our district over the coming years.
“In Fairbanks Local Schools, we have Pride in our Past, Passion in the present, and Preparing for the Future.”
Our mission is aspirational. It is something we can work on everyday together. We can live these everyday in our work with students, with our families, and our work together. Below are examples of school community members that live our mission everyday.
Matt has been the head soccer coach at Fairbanks High School since the mid-2000’s. He has built a program that focuses on relationships and growth. It then focuses on how to win together. The program has developed because of the pride this process has instilled. It means something to play soccer in his program. Last summer, over twenty former players came back to play in the annual alumni game. They shared stories about their time together playing and the relationships they built at Fairbanks. The pride on display is what Matt has developed over the years as the head coach for the Fairbanks Boys Soccer Program.
Have you ever had a conversation with one of Mr. Hammond’s former students? They will tell you how much they loved the class because of how Mr. Hammond took time to connect them to the content, learn about their talents and interests, and helped support them throughout the year. If you ever get a chance to watch Tony teach, it is one of most impressive things you will see. He lights up when students engage in their mathematical thinking. It looks like he is teaching with his hair on fire. Students are able to share their thinking, receive support from him, and engage in activities that are truly relevant to their growth as mathematical thinkers. Tony’s passion for students and their growth is infectious in his classroom.
Every semester seniors in Mrs. Falk’s internship class are interviewed by community members about what they learned during their internship. In all honesty, I interviewed a student and thought how this person will truly change the world in whatever they do in life. That is a credit to Mrs. Falk. Her classes are applicable to each student. Each may take something different away, but she prepares them for what they will experience outside of our school district. Our students leave her classroom, especially our senior internship students, ready to take on challenges and solve problems in our state, country, and the world.
We are so excited to welcome each of you back to Fairbanks for the 2021-2022 school year!
- Adham Schirg, Fairbanks Local Schools, Superintendent
